Liverpool did not have it easy however, they ultimately ended up with a perfect European away victory, with a 2-0 win in the San Siro thanks to goals from Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah.

It was an eerie moment as the team names were revealed and with Harvey Elliott making his Champions League debut against the Italian champions at the iconic San Siro Stadium.

The Reds had their first real chance came to Sadio Mane in the 14th minute. Sadio Mane receiving a totally free kick off an Andy Robertson free-kick and he missed but was able to scored the goal.

Inter immediately slid down at the opposite end, and Calhanoglu fired a shot at the bar at close range from an angle. It was a let-off.

Mane tried another overhead strike of the match and this time he hit the side net with the No.10 player heavily involved from the beginning.

Both teams had chances but neither was able to break the deadlock until the half-time mark. The referee ensured this by not letting the ball go just when Salah was unleashed in front of the Inter defense.

  • Elliott is the first player to make a Champions League debut
  • Four subs within the hour, as Klopp looked to gain more control
  • Two goals in eight minutes late on
  • Second leg at Anfield on March 8

Roberto Firmino was announced at the time of the break and replaced Diogo Jota.

Inter were in the second half as the better team and could’ve scored early on when they started to open Liverpool in the second half with a counterattack but the cross of Perisic was just missed by Martinez in the six-yard box.

Klopp performed three subs to stop the current on the hour, calling the team on Luis Diaz, Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita. On came Elliott, Mane and Fabinho and Fabinho, which was a surprise to all.

Diaz immediately made an impression and was close to finding the opening when he received the ball from Alexander-Arnold during a beautiful move, but his shot was stopped.

The breakthrough came after 15 minutes after Firmino shot a perfectly-placed shot off Robertson’s corner to the corner to the left.

Inter appeared to be running out of gas and Liverpool’s subs have contributed to the change.

The lead was increased in the final seven minutes after Salah scored inside the box after Van Dijk’s knockdown from the free kick.

James Milner was substituted for Thiago at the end of the game for his 808th appearance in the game.

It wasn’t a simple night but it wasn’t expected to go against Italy’s top side in Italy. Klopp’s subs played to perfection and with Diaz massively influential and, obviously, Firmino scoring the opener.
